Nassau, Bahamas, December 8th, 2017 (CDEMA) – The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), presented cheques totaling US $140,000 to the hurricane impacted countries of the British Virgin Islands (BVI) and the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI). Both territories received US $70,000 each to assist with further relief and recovery efforts post hurricanes Irma and Maria.

Bridgetown, Barbados , October 13th, 2017 (CDEMA) - The CDEMA Coordinating Unit (CU) is sensitive to the impact that disasters and climate change have on vulnerable populations including the youth. CDEMA is, therefore, aware of the contribution that this grouping can make to disaster risk reduction and the future of disaster management programmes in the region. To this end, the CDEMA CU coordinates a Youth Session each year during the Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Conference, demonstrating its commitment to educating and empowering youth and helping them to understand the risks they face and ways to manage them.

The United Nations General Assembly has designated October 13 as the date to celebrate the International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), to promote a global culture for disaster reduction, including its prevention and mitigation, as well as preparation activities.
The International Day for Disaster Reduction - #IDDR is a day to recognise the efforts individuals and communities have undertaken to reduce their risk to disasters and increasing the awareness of the importance of disaster risk reduction. It is also a day to urge all citizens and governments to be involved in efforts to establish communities and nations that are more resilient to disasters.
