Bridgetown, Barbados, October 4th, 2016 (CDEMA) – In anticipation of the potential impact of Hurricane Matthew on Haiti and the other Participating States of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the region’s premier institution for disaster management continues to facilitate coordination with its partners through the Regional Response Mechanism (RRM). At the latest meeting of the RRM, which was held on Tuesday October 4, 2016 at the CDEMA Coordinating Unit, a number of the regional response teams have been placed on stand-by to assist Participating States if the need arise.

Bridgetown, Barbados, September 30th, 2016 (CDEMA) – A meeting of the Eastern Caribbean Development Partner Group – Disaster Management (ECDPG-DM) was convened at the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) on Thursday September 29, 2016 to discuss the impact caused by the passage of Tropical Storm (TS) Matthew. Thirty-five (35) members representing various regional and international development agencies were present to receive a preliminary impact assessment provided by CDEMA. This was based on national situation reports received to date, current population data and potential impact. The latest briefing on TS Matthew was also provided by the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH).
MESSAGE: Tropical Storm Matthew forms in the Eastern Caribbean
THE SITUATION:
At 11:00 AM (EST), Wednesday September 28, 2016, the tropical disturbance that has been approaching the Eastern Caribbean was upgraded to a Tropical Storm. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), Miami, Florida, Tropical Storm Mathew, the 13th named storm of the 2016 Atlantic hurricane season, was formed near the Windward Islands and has acquired a closed circulation. It was centered at 11 a.m. AST about 35 miles (55 km) southeast of Saint. Lucia. Maximum sustained winds were near 60 mph (95 km/h) with higher gusts. Gradual strengthening during the next couple of days is forecast, and Matthew could become a hurricane by Friday.
