For the first time, World Tsunami Awareness Day (WTAD) is being commemorated all around the world in order to raise awareness on the importance of tsunami preparedness and to reaffirm the inherent links between disaster risk reduction and sustainable development. CDEMA joins with its national, regional and international partners in recognising and celebrating WTAD 2016. This year the events focus on effective education and evacuation drills. One example from the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions is the Caribe Wave Exercise, which happens every year.

Bridgetown, Barbados, October 14th, 2016 (CDEMA) - The Caribbean Community will rally support for its Member States, Haiti and The Bahamas, following the devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew. This was presented during CARICOM’s high level mission to both countries from October 11 – 13, 2016. The delegation which was led by Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community, Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit and the Secretary General of CARICOM, Ambassador Irwin LaRoque, also included; Mr Ronald Jackson, Executive Director of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), the Honourable Saboto Caesar, Minister of Agriculture, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Dr David Farrell, Principal of the Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH).
Bridgetown, Barbados, October 10th, 2016 (CDEMA) – A high level delegation will visit Haiti and The Bahamas between October 11 and 13, 2016 to undertake discussions with the leadership of the affected States and to confirm additional areas where the Caribbean Community can provide support.
